There are 90 members. Those who were born in Rio are called "Cariocas." They are happy, irreverent, festive and welcoming people. The 338 Ambassadors who have visited us have enjoyed the "spirit of Rio," a state of mind that comes from nature and the people as a mutual outburst of love constantly renewed. About the region:The Bay of Rio de Janeiro was discovered in 1502 by Portuguese navigator Goncalo Coelho in the month of January. Thinking it was a mouth of a river, he called it Rio de Janeiro. Rio has about six million inhabitants. It lies on a relatively narrow strip of land between the mountains and the ocean and presents highly contrasting geography resulting in unusual natural beauty.
